27 April to 3 May 2014

The round up for the week of 27 April to 3 May 2014.

There are no beatifications scheduled for this week, but Sunday 27 April will be the canonization of Ss John Paul II and John XXIII.

Sunday 27 April, I have nothing.

Monday 28 April, in 2010 in Venezuela, the repose of Esteban Robert Wood.  A priest from Washington, he was serving in Venezuela when he was killed in a robbery gone bad.  There is as yet no cause for his canonization.

Also 28 April, of interest to the Breton, the repose in 1716 in the Vendee of S Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort.  A Breton priest, founder of, among others, the Company of Mary, he is known for promoting Marian devotion.  He was canonized in 1947.

Also 28 April, of interest in Canada, the repose of the Venerable Servant of God Adolphe Chatillon.

Also 28 April, of interest in Paraguay, the repose of the Venerable Servant of God Maria Guggiari Echeverria.

Tuesday 29 April, in 1553 on Padre Island, Texas, the repose of Diego de la Cruz, Hernando Mendez, Juan Ferrer and Juan de Mena.  Though calling them martyrs is controversial, as they died as a result of a shipwreck off the coast of Texas, these Dominicans — the last a brother, the first three priests — did die while on mission.  I am not aware of a cause for their canonization.

Also 29 April, in 1999 in El Salvador, the repose of Ron Hennessey.  A Maryknoll priest and activist, he served in Central America from the sixties to his death.  I am not aware of a cause for his canonization.

Also 29 April, of interest in Canada, the repose of the Venerable Servant of God Elisabeth Bergeron.

Wednesday 30 April, of interest in Canada, the feast of S Marie of the Incarnation, born Marie Guyart Martin.

Thursday 1 May, of interest to the Breton, the feast of S Brioc.  Born in Wales and educated in Ireland, he came then to Brittany where he was the first Bishop of Saint-Brieuc and is counted among the Seven Founders of Brittany.  I am not aware of his cause being confirmed by Rome.

Friday 2 May I have nothing.

Saturday 3 May, of interest to the Breton, the repose in 1675 of Louis Eudo de Kerlivio.  A Breton priest, Vicar General of Vannes, he is best remembered today for pioneering work supporting hospitals.  I am not aware of a cause for his canonization.

Also 3 May, of interest in Canada, the memorial of Bl Marie Leonie (born Alodie-Virginie) Paradis.

S John Paul II, orate pro nobis.

S John XXIII, orate pro nobis.

S Louis de Montfort, orate pro nobis.

S Marie of the Incarnation, orate pro nobis.

S Brioc, orate pro nobis.

All the saints, ora pro nobis.

All the martyrs, ora pro nobis.

Apparently, the optional memorial in Canada for Bl Marie Leonie Paradis is 4 May, not 3 May, though I’m not certain why.
