The round up for 17 to 23 May 2015.

On Sunday 17 May, in Rome, Pope Francis will canonize four new saints, Maryam Bawardi of Jesus Crucified, Maria Cristina Brando, Marie-Alphonsine Danil Ghattas, and Emilie de Villeneuve.  On Saturday 23 May, Oscar Romero will be beatified in El Salvador and Irene Stefani will be beatified in Kenya.

Sunday 17 May, of interest in Cuba, the repose of the Venerable Servant of God Jeronimo Mariano Usera de Alarcon.

Monday 18 May, in 2009 in Guatemala, the death of Lorenzo Rosebaugh.  A priest from Wisconsin with the Missionaries Oblates of Mary Immaculate, he was killed in a robbery gone bad after decades working with the marginalized in Brazil, El Salvador, New York, and Guatemala.  I am not aware of a cause for his canonization.

Also 18 May, in 1675 in Michigan, the repose of Jacques Marquette.  A Jesuit priest from France, he was a missionary and explorer  in the seventeenth century Midwest.  I am not aware of a cause for his canonization.

Tuesday 19 May, of interest to the Breton, the feast of S Yves Helory.  A priest and secular Franciscan, he was a lawyer known for his service to the poor in Brittany.  He was canonized in 1347.

Also 19 May, of interest in Mexico, the repose of the Venerable Servant of God Leonardo Castellanos y Castellanos.

Also 19 May, of interest in Colombia and Ecuador, the feast of S Verena Butler.

Wednesday 20 May, in 1506 in Valladolid, Spain, the repose of the Servant of God Christopher Columbus.  Having discovered Puerto Rico, he is likely the first Servant of God to have set foot in the current United States.  His cause, while open, is long dormant.

Also 20 May, in 1582 in New Mexico, the killing of Augustin Rodriguez.  A Franciscan brother, he was killed by Native Americans and his body thrown in a river.  I am not aware of a cause for his canonization.

Also 20 May, of interest in Argentina and Chile, the memorial of the Blessed Crescencia Perez.

Thursday 21 May, of interest to the Breton, in 1996 in Algeria the killing of the Trappists of the Atlas, among whom were the Bretons the Servants of God Michel Fleury, brother, and Celestin Ringeard, priest.  The diocesan phase of their cause, with seventeen others, was closed in 2013.

Also 21 May, of interest to the Orthodox, the approximate date in 1799 of the repose in Alaska of Joasaph (Bolotov) of Kodiak, Enlightener of Alaska.  He has been proposed for glorification.

Also 21 May, of interest in Brazil, the memorial of the Blessed Martyrs Manuel Gomez Gonzalez and Adilio Daronch.

Also 21 May, of interest in Mexico, the feast of the twenty-five Holy Martyrs David Galvan Bermudez, Luis Batis Sainz, Manuel Morales, David Roldan Lara, Salvador Lara Puente, Jenaro Sanchez del Cadillo, Mateo Correa Magallanes, Julio Alvarez Mendoza, David Uribe Velasco, Sabas Reyes Salazar, Roman Adame Rosales, Cristobal Magallanes Jara, Agustin Caloca Cortes, Jose Isabel Flores Varela, Jose Maria Robles Hurtado, Miguel de la Mara y de las Mara, Rodrigo Aguilar Aleman, Margarito Flores Garcia, Pedro Esqueda Ramirez, Jesus Mendez Montoya, Turibio Romo Gonzalez, Justiano Urana Madrigal, Aticano Cruz Alvarado, Tranquilino Ubiarco Robles, and Pedro de Jesus Maldonado Lucero.

Friday 22 May, I have nothing.

Saturday 23 May, in 1951 in North Korea, the repose of the Servant of God Emil Kapaun.  A secular priest and military chaplain from Kansas, he was renowned for his personal holiness and self-sacrifice both before and after his seizure as a prisoner of war.  He died in a North Korean prison camp.  The diocesan portion of his cause closed in 2012.

Also 23 May, in 1873 in Missouri, the repose of Pierre-Jean de Smet.  Called the Apostle of Kansas, this Jesuit priest from Belgium was well known for his church building in nineteenth century America.  I am not aware of a cause for his canonization.
